HV/Electromagnetic Technologist (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a Engineering Support Technologist. The Electrical Sciences and Experiments Department has been extremely successful in attracting new work in the areas of electromagnetics, high voltage sciences, and advanced power systems. As part of this growth our experimental capabilities have also expanded over the past few years to include on of the world's largest gigahertz TEM cells, semi-anechoic test cells, and another reverberation chamber. This growth has driven a need for an additional team member. Therefore, we are seeking an early career technologist to support qualification work involving a Lightning Simulator, transverse electromagnetic test cells, and reverberation chambers. This position requires a utilization and knowledge of basic concepts, practices, and procedures for HV and electromagnetic systems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Support the design, execution, and analysis of high voltage and electromagnetic experiments
+ Maintain and operate the simulators.
+ Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair high-voltage and electromagnetic systems
+ Implement Engineered Safety, Work Planning and Controls, and comply with ES&H requirements
+ Perform critical lifts with bridge cranes and forklifts, confined space entries, and general laboratory and machine shop activities


+ Five years' experience conducting electrical experiments in a R&D environment
+ Experience maintaining/operating high voltage and electromagnetic experiments
+ Mechanical and electrical assembly experience
+ Experience with screen room diagnostics (oscilloscopes, pulse generators, network analyzers, etc.)
+ Experience with portable power tool equipment
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance


+ Design/drafting experience with AutoCAD, Solidworks, or equivalent
+ Experience maintaining and operating Marx generators
+ Experience operating TEM cells
+ Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing high-voltage, high-energy pulsed systems, a laser triggering system, gas and oil transfer systems, diagnostics and instrumentation
+ Experience developing and implementing Engineered Safety, Work Planning and Controls, and complying with ES&H requirements
+ Experience with Labview programming and running Labview
+ Experience with Matlab programming
+ Good verbal and written communication skills
+ Computer skills in Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint
+ Experience with Microsoft Office programs

Department 1353 is a multidisciplinary research and development group supporting NNSA Defense and Work for Other (WFO) Programs. Our capabilities include experimental electromagnetics, the design and manufacturing of advanced power electronics, compact high current drivers, electron beam accelerators, x-ray sources, development and analysis of advanced materials and components, and plasma physics. Department 1353 employs a comprehensive research approach that includes analysis, simulation, and hardware verification.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance to start.

Position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance or active clearance with another US government agency, e.g., DOD, to be considered for this position.
