Intern - Photovoltaics & Materials Technology Technical Undergra

We are seeking an undergraduate technologist student that is interested in a year-round internship. The Photovoltaics & Materials Technology department will call on you to help conduct research related to renewable energy. You should enjoy working in both a laboratory and outdoors performing field work. In this role, you will work with a high performing and cohesive team of renewable energy experts.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Build photovoltaic (PV) and data monitoring systems
+ Run PV test equipment
+ Perform equipment calibrations
+ Create or review drawings
+ Program in a variety of software languages
+ Analyze large data sets


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited associate or bachelor degree program in technology or engineering
+ Experience with hand tools


+ Knowledge of or eagerness to learn renewable energy concepts
+ Experience with electronic test equipment, electronic assembly, and wiring
+ Knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)
+ Computer programming skills: Python, LabVIEW, MatLAB, Excel Macros, or C
+ Interest in machine tool operations
+ Interest in pursuing a career in technology as demonstrated by academic major and/or coursework

Department Description:

The Photovoltaics & Materials Tech Department, part of Sandia's Renewable Energy Technologies Group, conducts research and development and applies real world solutions to increase the viability of sustainable and clean energy systems. Research focuses on solar energy photovoltaics (PV), materials chemistry, and device integration for energy generation, energy efficiency, and carbon management. We apply PV and materials research to the following areas: PV cell technologies including Si, CdTe and CIGS thin films, and emerging technologies (i.e., perovskites), advanced PV module designs (i.e., bifacial, split cells conformable), concentrating solar power, hydrogen production, and batteries for grid and device storage. We work in partnership throughout Sandia and with industry, academia, and other national labs in research for the Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office: Solar Energy Technology Office, Office of Electricity, the Department of Defense; and Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
