R&D Biological Science (Experienced)

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Biological Sciences & Engineering

The WMD Threats and Aerosol Science Department is seeking an engineer or scientist with an advanced technical education and experience with the generation, characterization, measurement, and detection of aerosol particles, particularly biological and chemical threat particles and/or therapeutic aerosol, to lead projects and be a national resource in the areas of aerosol science, chemical and biological detection, and aerosol formulation of therapeutics and decontamination. The successful applicant will be part of a high performing team that characterizes biological and chemical aerosol particles, investigates novel chemical and biological decontamination and mitigation technologies, and works to improve the nation's response to CBRN threats. Examples of how the successful candidate may accomplish these objectives include developing and leading projects that investigate the effects of the environment on threat particles, developing new approaches for the characterization of WMD threat particles, or developing novel aerosol formulations for broad CBRN applications. Applicants are expected to be familiar with laboratory and field measurement of chemical and biological aerosol, general aerosol science, aerosol generation and bench-level biology. Once the successful applicant has demonstrated the necessary analytical skills, he or she may support emergency response teams, which will require being on call 24/7 approximately one week in four. Some travel will be required.

+ Requires a bachelor's and master's degree in relevant STEM discipline plus five or more years experience; or bachelor's and doctorate in relevant STEM discipline plus three or more years experience. The requirement for a STEM Master's degree can be waived for candidates with a bachelor's in a relevant STEM discipline and 4 years experience.
+ At least 3 years of experience with aerosol generation, characterization, measurement, and/or detection.
+ Familiarity with common laboratory practices involving biology, chemistry, or aerosol science.
+ Experience with laboratory and field measurement of chemical and biological aerosol, general aerosol science, and bench-level chemistry or biology.
+ Experience leading teams that perform complex research and development projects.

+ Doctorate in Atmospheric Science, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or another relevant discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ At least 5 years of experience generating and measuring biological aerosols, chemical aerosols and/or therapeutic aerosols in a laboratory setting.
+ Experience developing new biological assays for the characterization of biological aerosol particles.
+ Experience developing novel aerosol formulations for CBRN applications, especially therapeutics and decontamination applications.
+ Experience developing chemical or biological contamination response and mitigation technologies.
+ Experience with a wide variety of aerosol measurement techniques.
+ Experience developing and/or fielding chemical and biological detection systems.
+ Experience leading projects for the DOE, DHS, DoD, or other U.S. governmental agencies.
+ Experience developing successful programs, including proposals for resear

Department Description:

Organization 6633, WMD Threats and Aerosol Science, applies chemistry, biology, computer science, engineering, and aerosol science to address real world situations that involve Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), primarily chemical and biological (CB) threats. The Team focuses on countering CB threats and similar dangers by conducting research and development in transport and fate, decontamination and remediation, and detection and interdiction of CB threats, especially aerosolized threats. The Team also uses extensive knowledge of aerosol science, chemistry, and engineering to address broader technological issues, ranging from the development of commercial products, especially decontamination formulations, and the performance of various foams to using aerosols to enhance the performance of security and weapon systems.
