Solutions Architect (Experienced)

Department 9341, Mission Computing Services (MCS), is seeking a Solutions Architect to provide leadership, IT technical direction, customer relationship management, and project management. The successful candidate will work with direct mission customers in architecting, engineering, developing and supporting complex, one of a kind IT environments for a wide range of direct laboratory missions. They will join a technical staff team of Solutions Architects, Project Managers, Service Managers, and IT technical staff with communal responsibility to deliver services and deliver on highly visible projects. MCS works in close conjunction with HPC sister organizations, CSS (3CSI, CSUs, TechDev, Prod Tools) and other IT organizations such as Cyber Security, Enterprise Computing, Networking, Database and Telecommunications to deliver robust, secure and reliable IT environments that ensure mission success.

Serves as the primary architect for information systems solutions that require a breadth of knowledge about, and experience with, multiple information systems domains such as information assurance, hardware, software, database, networking, systems and cyber security, and telecommunication. Possesses extensive, authoritative knowledge and deep experience in multiple specialized domains of information systems. Meets with customers - internal or external to Sandia - to determine information systems requirements and uses professional concepts to incorporate these requirements into solutions that may be commercial-off-the-shelf, open source, or internally developed domain options. May be responsible for project management in the realization of the information system solution. Frequently contributes to the development of new methods and is considered an internal expert in the information systems engineering field. May be responsible for prototyping or overseeing the prototyping of solutions. May oversee project documentation, marketing, training, budget, schedules, and resource utilization on projects. Develops solutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.


+ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or other relevant technical discipline plus five or more years of experience; or master's degree Computer Science, MIS, or other relevant technical discipline plus two or more years of experience; or doctorate in Computer Science, MIS, or other relevant technical discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Experience with Windows and/or UNIX/Linux environments.
+ Experience as a technical project lead or major contributor in addressing complex IT issues.


+ Experience developing and managing complex projects; a record of high performance in the successful delivery of projects that span organizational boundaries.
+ Technical expertise in supporting classified IT environments.
+ Advanced knowledge of techniques and tools that support applications such as software development methodologies, user-centric design, programming languages, source code control for release management, middleware
+ Experience in standing up new services and support.
+ Experience managing the finances and budgets of large projects.
+ Familiarity with ITIL principles and implementation, in particular with the design and transition of new services.
+ Possess a Project Management (PMI) certification, or willingness to pursue PMI certification.

Mission Computing Services (MCS) provides tailored IT services and support to Sandia mission organizations and customers. MCS delivers system administration, infrastructure solutions, project management, service management, cybersecurity, and other IT support for classified and unclassified environments. MCS partners with other corporate and mission IT providers in the delivery of its services and is engaged in technology development efforts for the Sandia Classified Network (SCN), Sandia Partnering Network (SPN), and other networks ranging from UNIX/LINUX/Windows Operating Systems, thin/virtual computing, and HPC computing to application support for mission programs. MCS is both direct and indirect funded.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
